  3. Grading Philosophy • Accurate performance-based feedback • Common assessments and long-term assignments • Short-term assignments, notebooks, homework, and classwork • Quarterly grading: 80% Assessment, 20% Daily work, homework • Midterm and final • PowerSchool

Math • Curriculum – based on PA State Standards & Core Standards • Resources – Math In Focus text (Book A & B), on line component (access coming soon) • Levels – ability grouping • Expectations – persevere, struggle, try everything • Grading - 80% assessments, 20% other work • Math Club - 2 days/week - T & Th-starting in November

Social Studies Interactive Notebook ( 5 subject Notebook) A collection of graphic organizers and illustrations that will teach note taking techniques of the big ideas in the Social Studies Units. Assessment 80% - reflect a student’s performance in common assessments, selected notebook pages and long-term projects. 20% - reflect a student’s performance on short-term assignments, notebooks, homework.

  9. Language Arts • Balanced literacy approach: reading, writing, speaking, and listening • Houghton Mifflin theme-based reading program • Novels • Writing: • Narrative • Persuasive • Informational

General Stuff • PowerSchool – parents and students should check progress at least weekly • Advisory – T & Th, themed-focused based on student and HMS need • Google Docs – “Cloud” storage for documents • Homework club: • 4 days a week – MTWR • Rooms 252 and 278 • Starting the week of October 14th

  11. Communication • Email – Pick up a contact card on your way out! • Phonenumber • Assignment book • Web page for daily homework • Weekly email to AF parents – be sure to correct/update email addresses on sheets around the library. Weekly emails (Falcon Flyer) will start this Friday, Sep 27.

Special Education The special education program at Haverford Middle School includes a variety of programs and services to meet the varied needs of students who have been identified as exceptional. The goal is to educate students in the least restrictive environment. The curriculum is the same as the general education curriculum. The materials used are supplemented in order work more intensely on specific skills.

Special Education Language Arts • Language Circle: Linguistics • Language Circle: Framing Your Thoughts • Read Naturally Math • Smaller groupings allow for slower paced instruction, additional practice, and individualized attention. • Curricular materials are adapted to meet students’ unique needs.
