Remote Mentoring • The merger of mentoring with electronic communications that links mentors with mentees • To overcome barriers to traditional face-to-face mentoring • Virtual Environment to provide information, guidance and support for student internship, Collaborative Project and Research Remote Mentoring, NITK-Surathakal
Motivation • Need to satisfy the increasing demand for Internship, project and research guidance • Need to increase number of indigenously developed patented technology/product. • New and inexperienced faculty needs - pedagogy to service to research motivation. • Academic and Industry collaboration • The constraints of Social Status is absent. Existing Systems • Hewlett-Packard has leadership development programs in which high-potential mentees are paired with mentors who can help them excel • Intel’s mentoring program is completely virtual, matching mentors and mentees across state lines and national boundaries • IBM’s Remote Mentoring Project under University Relations • MentorNet(http://www.mentornet.net) is an email-based mentoring network created in the USA for the support of female engineering and science students. • The BlueCare E-mentoring system is purely email; there is no facility for synchronous communication such as video conferencing or instant messaging Remote Mentoring, NITK-Surathakal
