3. Objectives • To foster a love of and enthusiasm for History • To visit some of the sites studied in the Year 9 Unit on the Great War • To experience a site visit before our GCSE coursework on Carlisle Castle • To understand more about how and why History is researched, written and interpreted • To reflect upon the impact of war • To research family members and members of the school who died in the War • To practise our French, and visit a Belgian and French town • To have a good time!

4. Itinerary • Monday 6th July • 5am Meet at school for prompt Departure from school – • 13.35 Check in at Dover • 14.45 Ferry to Calais • Drive to our accommodation, at Lo outside Ypres • 18.45 Arrival (1 hour ahead of British time)

Itinerary • Tuesday 7th July • Visit the Menin Gate • Flanders Field Museum situated in the historic Cloth Hall in the centre of Ypres • Hooge Crater Museum and Cemetery (lunch) • Tyne Cot The largest Commonwealth Cemetery in the world • Langemark German Cemetery • Essex Farm Cemetery and Dressing Station • 6pm Evening meal in a restaurant in Ypres • 8pm Wreath laying during the Last post salute at the Menin Gate * (subject to alteration depending on time)

Itinerary • Wednesday 8th July • 8am Drive into France • Lochnagar Crater • Thiepval Memorial and Visitors’ Centre on the Somme • Ulster Tower (lunch) • 1pm Trenches at Newfoundland Park at Beaumont-Hamel • 3pm Guided tour of tunnels at Vimy Ridge Canadian National Memorial • Cemeteries of personal interest • Return to Ypres

20. Thursday 9th July • 10.30am Memorial Museum Passchendale at Zonnebeke • Visit to Bruges for an afternoon’s sightseeing/shopping • 7.30pm Bowling in Ypres – this was a late addition and will incur an extra charge of around 4 Euros per student. Each student should keep back sufficient money for this to pay themselves in.

27. Please note:There may well be other school groups there. Clearly we would expect our students to behave with the utmost courtesy and respect when in contact with other school parties, or groups of any sort, both in the hotel and outside. • Room sizes vary between 2-6 (5/6 is normal) and there is not much flexibility. Please name someone with whom you would like to share and hand your slip to Mrs Lee-Adamson before you leave and we will do our best to accommodate your request. We cannot demand extra rooms etc so sometimes you will have to share with people you may not know well (yet) – please be patient about this. Rooms are for sleeping in only anyway, not socialsing in so it should not matter too much!

Kit list • The weather in Belgium and northern France is like here so… • Layers of clothes so both hot and cool conditions can be met • Clothing appropriate to the nature of the visit (reasonably smart for Menin Gate ceremony) • A waterproof coat • Sensible shoes (we will be walking in trenches!) • Sun cream and sun hat (we live in hope!) • Nightwear • Wash kit to include soap and towel • Any personal medication – labelled – epipens • Clipboard, pens, pencils • Students can bring cameras, ipods, mobiles, DVDs etc but this is entirely at students’ own risk. Leave valuable items at home! (Warning about expensive bills) • Some spending money ( £60 (?) should be ample) Also to be students’ personal responsibility. Please ensure you have some money left for food and drink on the way back! • Packed lunch • (Clothes and personal belongings to be clearly marked) • Plastic bags

31. Work! • This is not a jolly! I expect all students to do some research/reading about the First World War before they go in order for them to get the most out of it. They should research a family member and/or a Trinity Old Boy as stated in the letter. Please see the school war memorial on our webpage. 32. Finding the Fallen • There are 88 names on the Trinity School War Memorial. We intend to find 20 of the Old Boys on our visit. Each student has been asked to research one of the Boys and find his grave/name and photograph it. 43. Behaviour contract • Parents and students should be aware of the following: • Students should obey instructions of staff on the trip at all times • In particular, seatbelts must be worn at all times on the coach • On the ferry, students should not go on deck alone, and should not climb on the railings • Bedtimes and lights out should be strictly observed. For the trip to be a success, we all need a good night’s sleep • No girls in boys’ rooms at any time and vice versa • No leaving of bedrooms after bed time • Ground floor windows to be closed. Doors locked and only opened to staff • Stay in room allocated – no dragging of beds/mattresses into other rooms • Get up promptly in the morning • No one to miss breakfast • Meeting times to be met at all times so one person is not holding up the other 50 • Parents to be informed of any transgressions of the above • In extreme cases, parents to collect student at own expense

One copy to be left in school, one carried by group leader.(These will be destroyed after the trip) • Consent Form Please make sure this is also handed in. It is imperative that this contains accurate and up to date medical information and emergency telephone numbers.
