VCU Libraries Presents A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources A lecture and hands-on computer workshop on GenBank and related databases covering the effective use of the Entrez databases and search service, the BLAST similarity search engine, genome data, and other related resources. • Course Description Molecular sequence databases are an important part of nearly all areas of biological and biomedical research. This class is designed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information to assist scientists and researchers in their research efforts. The course consists of a 3-hour morning lecture followed by a 2-hour instructor-led computer workshop. During the hands-on session students will learn how to apply the resources at the NCBI site in their specific research area. The course provides practical information about GenBank, RefSeq and the integrated genome resources, and other databases maintained at the NCBI. The updated class now features the NCBI assembly and annotation of human, mouse and rat genomes, the updated map viewer genome displays, the new genome-specific BLAST pages, the new NCBI curated conserved domains, and Cn3D 4.1. Intended Audience The course is designed for principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and those studying life sciences working with biological sequence data. • Lecture / General Session • March 15, 9:00 AM - noon • Monroe Park campus: Life Sciences BCCL and TBA • MCV campus: Sanger 1-044 • Hands-On Sessions • (Trani BCCL and TML LIMERC Classroom) • TBA • Individual Consultations • (Trani Center BCCL and TML LIMERC Classroom) • TBA • *Must attend General Session to Register • **Must attend Hands-On Session to Register About the Instructors Course instructors are biologists at the User Services division, National Center for Biotechnology Information, National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health The course is free and open to anyone who would like to attend, but REGISTRATION ISREQUIRED.
