Corroboration • The Times opinion pages columnist Maureen Dowd focused unfavorably on repeated instances in the book of Bush feeling “blindsided.” • Journalist Tim Rutten for the Los Angeles Times found the book “unexpectedly engrossing.” • Former Chancellor of Germany, Gerhard Schroeder stated, “The former American president is not telling the truth.” • Journalist Michael Barone wrote for National Review praising Bush for admitting to “serious errors up front.”

  8. Annotation • This is an excerpt from George W. Bush’s 2010 memoir referring to the first discussions he had with his advisers about what to do about terrorism and Iraq. In it show that Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney both advocated for attacking Iraq while Colin Powell was hesitant. Powell and Rumsfeld thought it would be a good antiterrorism policy. • Origin: The source info • Purpose: President Bush is trying to portray himself as being calm and deliberative. • Value: The excerpt includes direct quotes from key participants in the discussions suggesting clarity of memory and it was also written by the only real person who has direct knowledge of the motives to launch the attack against Iraq. • Limitations: Since it is a memoir President Bush might be using this in a way to restore/repair his image and set the record straight because he is one of the lowest rated presidents in American history.
