What is leukemia? • Leukemia is a cancer of blood making cells. It is derived from the Greek work ‘leukos’, which means white and ‘aima’, which means blood. • Leukemia causes a large number of white blood cells to be made. These are not usual white blood cells but damaged ones. They crowd the bone marrow so the bone marrow can no longer produce enough red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
