  2. Enlightenment: 33 • When English people began to settle the Americas, they brought with them a history of limited and representative government. These were the ideas of a cultural movement called the enlightenment.

  3. Monarch: 33 • Another name for a monarch is a King or a Queen.

  4. Legislature: 33 • Britain’s lawmaking body was called Parliament.

  5. Natural Rights: 34 • According to the enlightenment writer John Locke everyone posses the rights of life, liberty, and property.

  6. Social Contract: 35 • A social contract is an agreementamongthepeople in a society. They give up part of their freedom to a government in exchange for protection.

  7. Charter: 36 • A charter is a writtendocument granting land and authority to set up colonialgovernments.

  8. Joint Stock: 36 • A joint stock company was formed by investors who owned the colony and shared in future profits.

  9. Proprietary Colony /Royal Colony: 39 • A proprietary colony is one where an owner or proprietor owns the land and controls the government. In a Royal colony the king rules and owns the colony.
