Getting started… • The main goal of persuasive writing is to affect the thoughts and actions of the reader or listener. • A pro-con chart can help you organize your thoughts before writing. • You should include your opinions as long as they are relevant and informed.
A work in progress… • The best way to strengthen your arguments is to convincingly respond to a specific opposing claim. • Your view point is “Coke is better than Pepsi.” • Respond to the opposing claim by stating, “Some people like the sweet taste of Pepsi, but the added sugar can cause tooth decay.”
The most effective place to put your strongest point is in the introduction or the conclusion. • After you have written a rough draft, walk away from your paper for a day. You will come back to it with a fresh perspective and be able revise it well.
Persuasion in Advertising • The main goal of advertising is to arouse interest. • It is important to be able to tell facts from opinions. • Advertisers are skilled at making opinions sound like facts so they are more believable. • You should do this too!
Fact or Opinion? • Atlanta is the capital of Georgia. • Atlanta is the most exciting city in the south. • The Georgia Aquarium has 4 whale sharks. • The Georgia Aquarium is very educational. Can you make an opinion sound more like a fact?
Positive and Negative Words • Remember learning about connotation? • We attach positive and negative feelings to certain words. • Advertisers take advantage of these feelings when trying to persuade their audience.
Work choice depends on the goal of the advertisement. • Careless or Daring • Active or Overworked • Eccentric or Weird • Shy or Reserved • Bossy or Assertive
