Math Diagnostic • 3x102 * 7x105 = (write answer in scientific notation) • 6.2x104/9x104= (write answer in scientific notation) • convert 10 mm -> m • convert 500 cm-> m • How many significant figures are in the number 06.0010 • Solve the following equation for r. F=Gm1m2/r2 • Solve the following equation: ½(20kg)(40m/s)2 • Find the horizontal component of a 4 unit long line starting at the origin at an angle of 30 degrees. • Find the vertical component of a 4 unit long line starting at the origin at an angle of 30 degree. • Find the dot product of two vectors that are 10 units and 4 units in length if the angle between them is 60 degrees. • Find the cross product of two vectors that are 10 units and 4 units in length if the angle between them is 60 degrees. • An object travels 10 meters north is 30 seconds. Find the speed and velocity.
Phase 1: What does your gut tell you is right? • If Professeur Ancalade is wrong, you must have some kind of suspicion or guess or hunch about what is really right. So tell me, even though it will turn out to be ridiculous and preposterous because Prof. Ancalade is right of course. I’ll enjoy a good laugh!
Phase 2: Give reasons why your gut feeling is right. 2) State your reasons for believing that this the correct explanation. Explain why your answer to phase 1 feels right to you?
Phase 3. Try to Prove Prof. A Wrong Prove it! Test your gut feelings on what happens, by proposing an experiment. Prof. Ancalade requires a step by step procedure on how to practice the art of levitation without his incantations. Unimportant Extra Note of Caution, Please Disregard: (Remember Prof. Ancalade is defending his beliefs in wizardry, so he will repeatedly try to do whatever he can to misinterpret your procedures so that you won’t be able to prove him wrong and his beliefs will remain unchallenged. Be very very clear so he fails.)
Phase 4: The Humbling 4) Hand your papers to the Professeur. He will now demonstrate how feeble your attempts at refuting the truth of wizardry are, one by one.
Phase 5 Reflection: What was the point of this charade? Reflect on what happened today. Write one to two paragraphs about what happened? If you need a bit of structure you can answer the following questions. • What assumptions did Prof. A make that prevented him from seeing reason? • What is the difference between science and wizardry? • What did you learn from this? • What is the point of this lesson, why would I do something so silly and so strange? What do you think Mr. Ancalade wanted you to get from this? • Any other comments you’d like to make.
