  5. SYMBOLISM • Symbol= an object or action that represents an intangible feeling or idea. • In Chapter 10, we came across two very important symbols in the novel: • the mad dog • the mockingbird

  6. SYMBOLISM • Think about what is said about these two animals and try to make an educated guess about what each symbolizes (i.e. represents) • Consider Atticus’ role in shooting the mad dog, and how unpleasant it is for him. • Consider what a mockingbird is known for and why Atticus might warn his kids against harming them.

  7. CHAPTER 10 ANALYSIS In Chapter 10, we come across two MAJOR symbols– the mockingbird and the mad dog. Re-read the parts that discuss mockingbirds (pg. 90). Then, review what happens to the mad dog (pgs. 95-99). Write down what you know about each animal. Then, try to find out what they might symbolize. Hint: • What does Miss Maudie say mockingbirds DO and DON’T do? What does Atticus say about these birds? What group of people in Maycomb might be like mockingbirds? • WHO has to kill the mad dog? Does this person have to “kill” anything else in society?
