Basic Cultural Values • -Hierarchical society • -top boss or executive makes the final decisions • -Management is authoritative • - manager is the one who has answers to difficult problems and gives instructions • -instructions are given in a precise comprehensive way • -Are both information and relationship oriented

  4. Ways of Thinking Individualistic Society • High Family Values • Religious and Traditional • Ambitious and Hardworking • Value Security

Do’s and Don’ts Right-Thing-to-Do • Come prepared • Personal relationship building is essential • Wait for a woman to extend her hand upon meeting • Address people with Pan (Mr.) and Pani (Mrs.) • Include advanced university degrees and titles on business cards • Stand when a woman or host enters or leaves the room Taboo’s • Do not rush proceedings • Do not imitate older businessmen’s greeting • Do not use first names unless you have been invited to do so • Do not speak in a high tone or point a finger at someone • Do not ask a female her age • Do not ask for a tour of the house

Ethics & Gifts • Gifts are commonly given at the beginning of a relationship as well as at the end of the project • If someone invites you to dinner at their own place a small gift (wine/flowers) is expected • Best gifts are items typical of your culture • Do not give expensive gifts (no more than 200 euros)

  7. Timing • Be Punctual • Meeting Times • Informal Events • Appointments • After Work Hours

Alcohol & Entertainment • Relationship building may be done over food • Never talk business at social occasions- this time is to get to know your counterpart • Host usually pays the dinner bill, but it is polite to offer • Expect frequent toasting, with hard liquor • Alcohol is served in small glasses • Alcohol serves as a culturally important function- Poles like to entertain

Non-Task Sounding Business Meetings: - First few meetings contain a lot of small talk more than business discussions -focus on building long lasting relationships -lunch and dinner meetings are often common - expect preparation and detail in later decision making steps -decisions will be made by top executives at company

Means of Persuasion • Spend time to explain why working together is beneficial • Presentations should have well organized information with statistics to support, and a feel-good factor • If decision maker is present then decisions can be made; otherwise the meeting will be for sharing and considering information

  12. Time of Year to Visit • June to September • Pleasant weather • -winter months are cold • offer unpredictable weather • december has a lot of holiday season festivities

  13. Interpretation of Ethics • Consider themselves to be of the highest ethical standard part of the competitive package • Bribery and Corruption • Smaller scale business • exchange of money

  14. Terms of Agreement • Timetables play an important role in defining the activities of both business partners • If there is no future, each party has the right to terminate and an explanation will be expected
