  2. Our Environment Through Time • Humans have always had an impact on the environment. Where is this?

  3. Hunter-gatherer Societies • For most of human history, people were hunters and gatherers. • Got energy from plants and animalsusing primitive tools. • Moved from place to place following herds/food sources Effect?

  4. Hunter-gatherer Societies • Negative Effect • Over hunting animals almost to extinction. • Positive Effect • Rotational hunting – allowed populations to recover. Sea otters in Aleutian Islands.

  6. Agricultural Revolution • Domesticated animals – non-human muscle power • Cultivation of plants - crops • Farming could support 500 times more people in an area than hunter-gatherer societies. Effect?

  7. Agricultural Revolution • Negative Effect • Destroyed habitats. • Soil erosion. • Positive Effect • Could build permanent homes. • Increased technology – tools didn’t need to be portable. • Wealth

  8. Industrial Revolution • Occurred in England during 1760 – 1850 • Invention of machines – Example: Steam Engine • Factories – More city life and centralized populations Effect?

Industrial Revolution • Negative Effects • Air pollution • Water pollution – sewage ran through the streets. • Increased disease outbreaks – e.g. cholera • Positive Effects • Improved the quality of life • Less expensive goods • Transportation easier and faster Factory worker housing in Garngad Scotland, 1925

Environmental Problems • Some Major Causes: • Over-consumption/excessive or unnecessary use of resources • Non-equitable distribution of resources • Overpopulation • Slash and burn agricultural practices • Technological and industrial development • Erosion • Irrigation • Mining for oil and minerals • Drainage of wetlands • Forestry • Hunting / poaching
