Many agencies have business problems that require them to answer a set of very basic questions that requires sifting through petabytes of information; • A person of interest (who); • is going to perform (or has performed) an activity (what); • at a given time (when – temporal ); • at a given location (where - geospatial); • for a an unknown reason (why – sentiment/semantic);
Characteristics • Multiple sources of data • Multiple types of data (structured, unstructured, OSINT, HUMINT, GEOINT, SIGINT, IMINT, MASINT etc) • Persistent data • Multiple classification levels • Multiple agencies/analysts • Multiple needs/missions • Laws, regulations impacting sharing and what can be used for what
Issues • Technology • Big Data • Validity, Confidence level is critical • Info Sharing • People and Culture • Governance
Technology • How do we put the language of data into the language of users? Need to create semantic objects that represent what we want to know in the way we want to know it rather than in its raw data representation. • Needs to be a combined structured and unstructured process. Need to translate data into useable language from both types of data simultaneously. • Entity extraction/resolution • Extract people, organizations, locations of interest (from unstructured text) • Group • Differentiate • Text analytics • Conceptual and contextual • Discover relationships • Metadata tagging • Locations • Temporal • Automatic? • Scalability • Security
Semantic Analysis and Translation … Can I find What I Want? Organization(s) of Interest negative sentiment organization person person Activity People of Interest Location of Interest location activity Location watch list person Activity(s) of Interest Organization of Interest Watch list Person(s) of Interest Location(s) of Interest
