  1. Lacrosse History • Lacrosse was an old sport played by the natives of Canada about the time the Europeans came into contact with them. Lacrosse is a sport played with a stick with a small net at the end and a ball, with two nets at each end. Much of the game rules and style of game playing was not recorded when the Europeans first came into contact with it.

  2. Lacrosse Today • Today there are two main types of Lacrosse, box and field. The main differences between the two is that box is played in a small, boxed in cement quart, and field is played on a large field, and some of the team uses larger sticks known as “big sticks”. Box lacrosse is played with six players including the goalie and field is played with 10 players.

  3. Hockey History • Until 1980 it was thought that hockey came from English field hockey and Indian lacrosse and was spread around Canada by British soldiers in the 1800’s. Research has now shown that the game hockey was played by Micmac Indians influenced by the Irish game of hurling and was played with a wooden block instead of a puck. The game also used elements from field hockey like the “bully”, now known as the face off. The name hockey came from the French work hoquet (shepherds stick). The first time a puck was used was in the year 1860.

  4. Hockey Rules • Hockey today is played with 6 players on the ice at a time including the goalie. The object of the game is to shoot the puck into the opposing team’s net to score 1 point. The rink is divided into 3 parts, the middle part being neutral and the other two being each teams defensive zone.

  5. The Stanly Cup • The very first playoffs for the stanly cup started on march 22nd, 1894. In 1892 the stanly cup was donated by Sir Frederick Arthur. It was first used as a trophy given to the best amateur team. In 1910, professional teams started to compete for it, in 1926 it was given to the NHL for exclusive use.
