There are 2 types of location Absolute Location- the exact point or position Relative Location- a point or position in relation to another one. Types of Location
There are 5 components to a map. Title Direction Indicator Latitude/Longitude lines Scale Key/Legend Map Components
Title- gives the subject or topic of the map. • Direction Indicators- 2 types • Compass Rose- symbol with at least the Cardinal Directions • Northern Arrow- arrow pointing N. Title and Directions
Hemisphere- half of a sphere • N/S Hemisphere- divided by the latitude line known as the equator. • E/W Hemisphere- divided by the longitude line known as the Prime Meridian. Latitude & Longitude
Latitude & Longitude Lines- lines that cross to form a grid system. • Longitude Lines (aka meridians)- imaginary lines that run vertically from N to S. • Meet at the poles. • Labeled E or W depending on location from Prime Meridian. • Prime Meridian divides E & W hemispheres. Latitude and Longitude continued
Latitude Lines (aka parallels)- imaginary lines that run horizontally from E to W. • These lines never meet. • They are labeled N or S depending on their location from the equator. • Equator divides the N & S hemispheres. Latitude and Longitude continued
Arctic Circle Antarctic Circle Tropic of Cancer (Summer) Tropic of Capricorn (Winter) Important Latitude Lines
Cardinal Directions- N, E, S, W ( Never Eat Soggy Waffles) Intermediate Directions- NE, NW, SE, SW Directions
Key/Legend- unlocks the meanings of symbols on a map. This is found in a boxed off area on the map • Scale- used to measure the distance between places. • Ex. 1 inch= 100 miles. Key/Legend & Scale
