What is it? • It is a national monument in New Mexico • It is 10 acres • It is an area filled with sand made of gypsum mineral, which is not very hard
Gypsum • Gypsum is a soft mineral that makes the White Sands. • The sand is formed when big pieces of Gypsum breaks in to small pieces. • These small pieces are then carried away with the wind. • This makes them rub against each other which makes the pieces smaller and smaller. • Finally it becomes fine, smooth sand corn.
History • 100 million years ago it was covered by sea. • It was discovered by some officers in 1849 • In 1933, President Herbert Hoover made it a national park.
Today • They are looking for a better way to protect it • One way is to make more people visit the national park
Animals • There are scorpions, insects, spiders, lizards and other kind of animals living in White Sands.
