  5. White Sands National Monument includes about 275 square miles of gypsum sand dunes. It is contained within the Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico which is surrounded by mountains. The mountains and lack of rivers flowing through this area help create the dry conditions needed for gypsum sand dunes.
