  3. About Nouns in French • In French nouns are either masculine or feminine. Most nouns ending in –e, –ée, –téand –ionare feminine, like la fille(girl) and la nation (nation). Most nouns ending in –age, –eau, –ail, and consonants are masculine, like l’oiseau (bird), le travail(work) and le chat (cat). Some nouns that refer to people change their endings to indicate gender. For example: L’étudient/l’étudiente(student). There are, however, exceptions to this rule, and the best way to learn the gender of words is by memorizing the article that goes with them.
