Mobile Wireless Internet Forum Nick Sampson, Vice President, Business Operations. ITU Informal Forum Summit, December 3 & 4, 2001
Mission Statement • To drive acceptance and adoption of an open single mobile wireless and internet architecture that is independent of the access technology.
Mobile Wireless Internet Forum • Formed in January 2000. • Started with 45 founding members. • Current Membership - 77 members • Operator and ISP led • Only Operators/ISPs on Board of Directors
Accomplishments - Technical Reports • MTR 001v2 - Architecture Principles • MTR 002v2 - Architecture Requirements • MTR 003v1 - Layered Functional Architecture • MTR 004v2 - Network Reference Architecture • MTR 006v2 - IP as Transport in the RAN • MTR 007v1 - OpenRAN Architecture in 3rd Generation Mobile Systems
Accomplishments - Marketing • Marketing Committee Established • MWIF Newsletter launched • MWIF Overview Brochure created • 3 Trade Shows (N+I, CTIA, CDMA) • Extensive Press Coverage • Speaker Program Launched
Accomplishments - Influence • Focus the industry on access network independence to drive the industry into 3G and 4G services that fit seamlessly into the evolving Internet. • Brought together technical experts from operator and vendor companies, and telco and internet companies, serving as an open arena to develop and refine the many Internet based ideas now in use in other standards setting efforts. • Focus on the use of IP transport in the radio access network - improvements that are now being standardized in 3GPP and 3GPP2. • Created a list of high level operator requirements, proclaiming the direction of the wireless industry for 3G and beyond. • Created a set of design principles that codify the Internet model.
Accomplishments - Influence • Designed an architectural model for a wireless system based on MWIF principles and requirements. Individuals who were deeply involved in this work also played a pivotal role in the architectural designs in both 3GPP and 3GPP2, resulting in a cross pollination of these activities. • Initiated a research-level examination of the design of radio access networks, looking to simplify and use lessons learned in the Internet. The results of that research are being made available to 3GPP and 3GPP2 through individual company contributions. • Created service scenarios to prove the concepts of the MWIF design architecture and the applicability of the Internet model to wireless services. Parts of this work are being used by 3GPP and 3GPP2 to amplify similar work, and to raise awareness of potential service scenarios being considered by operators.
Strategic Goals For 2002 • Bring the core network standards of 3GPP and 3GPP2 closer together • Create greater understanding of the need for and value of a single open mobile Internet architecture • Increase mobile operators’ understanding of the value and benefits of Internet based solutions • Increase the involvement of Internet companies • Help create a plug and play environment within the RAN and between the RAN and the core
Support of Strategic Goals Bring the core network standards of 3GPP and 3GPP2 closer together • Core network initiative continues • Finalize Gap analysis document • Create a set of operation and business requirements from MWIF’s gap analysis for harmonization • Utilize requirements to formally and informally influence standardization – Initial activities will include: • Provide operation and business requirements for OHG’s harmonization meeting in 1Q02 • MWIF operators will work behind the scenes to proactively garner support for the requirements • Develop realistic incremental steps to meet harmonization requirements • Working groups 6 & 7 will lead this initiative
Support of Strategic Goals Create greater understanding of the need for and value of a single open mobile Internet architecture Increase mobile operators’ understanding of the value and benefits of Internet based solutions • Supporting Activities • Business value white-paper (WG-8) • Proof of concept and validation efforts (WG-9) • Educational Activities (MDE) • Quarterly Newsletter • Webtorials/Webcasting • Educational tools for use by members (e.g., brochures) • Promotional Activities (MDE) • Tradeshows • PR campaign, advertising
Support of Strategic Goals Increase the involvement of Internet Companies • Supporting Activities • BOD led campaign • Inviting Internet companies to speak at TC virtual meetings Help create a plug and play environment within the RAN and between the RAN and the core • Supporting Activities • MTR-007 v2 (WG-4) • Define RNRA (WG-4) • Define open interfaces (WG-4)
Support of Strategic Goals Operator Requirements MWIF will continue to refine, maintain and ensure compliance with operator requirements in support of all five strategic goals • Supporting Activities • Invite and incorporate new requirements • Continue reviews of 3GPP and 3GPP2 requirements to increase harmonization
Summary • MWIF is an ‘influencing’ group • Does not seek to duplicate technical activities • “Make the internet mobile” • Operator and ISP led • MWIF Board has set five key goals for 2002 and are committed to these to realize the MWIF mission
