  3. The Mission “The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.”

  4. The Goals 1. To provide intellectual access to information through learning activities that are integrated into the curriculum and that help all students achieve information.

  5. Goals 2. To provide a physical access to information through a carefully selected and systematically organized local collection of diverse learning resources that represent a wide range of subjects, levels of difficulty, and formats;a systematic procedure for acquiring information and materials from outside the library media center and the school through such mechanisms as electronic networks, interlibrary loan, and cooperative agreements with other information agencies

  6. Goals 3. To provide learning experiences that encourage students and others to become discriminating consumers and skilled creators of information.

  7. Goals 4. To provide leadership, collaboration, and assistance to teachers and others in applying principles of instructional design to the use of instructional and information technology for learning.

  8. Goals 5. To provide resources and activities that contribute to lifelong learning while accommodating a wide range of differences in teaching and learning styles, methods, interests, and capacities.

  9. Goals 6. To provide a program that functions as the information center of the school, both through offering a locus for integrated and interdisciplinary learning activities within the school and through offering access to a full range of information for learning beyond this locus.

To provide resources and activities for learning that represent a diversity of experiences, opinions, and social and cultural perspectives and to support the concept that intellectual freedom and access to information are prerequisite to effective and responsible citizenship in a democracy.

  13. Principle 1:The library media program supports the mission, goals, objectives, and continuous improvement of the school. • National Goals - NCLB • District Goals • School Goals (SIT plan)

Principle 2: In every school, a minimum of one full-time, certified/licensed library media specialist supported by qualified staff is fundamental to the implementation of an effective library media program at the building level. • Schools systems, governmental agencies, individual private schools all determine funding of positions

Principle 3: An effective library media program requires a level of professional and support staffing that is based upon a school’s instructional programs, services, facilities, size, and numbers of students and teachers. • MSDE recommends staffing levels in accordance to a school’s size & programs • Note: School systems and individual schools don’t always follow this.

Principle 4: An effective library media program requires ongoing administrative support. • Withoutadmin support, you’re sunk…. • It’s all about building a positive relationship & demonstrating the importance of the library media program in relation to student achievement • Don’t forget the central office, parents, etc.

Principle 5: Comprehensive and collaborative long-range, strategic planning is essential to the effectiveness of the library media program. • Develop a media center mission & goals based on your school, district, state, & national goals* • Monitor & share them *Information Power goals should be incorporated.

  18. Principle 6:Ongoing assessment for improvement is essential to the vitality of an effective library media program • After establishing goals, monitor & evaluate • The administrator must be involved. • Other stakeholders too…

  19. Principle 7: Sufficient funding is fundamental to the success of the library media program. • Schools systems, governmental agencies, individual private schools determine funding of program • AACPS – County Exec. & Council, Board of Ed. - MOI & staffing

Principle 8: Ongoing staff development--both to maintain professional knowledge and skills and to provide instruction in information literacy for teachers, administrators, and other members of the learning community--is an essential component of the library media program. A Library Media Specialist must…. • Maintain his/her skills by continuing coursework, workshops, professional conferences & involvement • Be an instructional leader – share knowledge, teach staff
