Reading Aloud to Your Child at Home • Talk as you read. Ask questions like: “What would you do?” “What do you think is going to happen next?” “Why did that character do that?”
Reading Aloud to Your Child at Home • Read books that are interesting to your child. • Encourage your child!
Reading Aloud to Your Child at Home • Have your child retell the story in his or her own words. • After finishing the book, talk with your child about what you read.
What is fluency? • Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. • Fluency is necessary for students to understand what they are reading (aloud or silently). Fluent Readers… • read in phrases • add intonation appropriately • read smoothly • read with expression
Why is fluency important? fluency • Fluency is the bridge between simple word recognition and comprehension. word recognition comprehension • When children can automatically recognize words, they can put more effort into comprehension – which is the main goal of reading! • The reading task is also more enjoyable for fluent readers because they’re not struggling to read each word!
