  3. Our Goals • To give students the academic and social skills they need to progress to the seventh grade. • To provide a supportive and challenging classroom environment. • To encourage students to take a leadership role in their education.

  5. Reading:Miss Jeffries & Mrs. Rice • Literature  appreciation, Informational text, vocabulary, comprehension, decoding, and fluency. • Titles of Literature sets: • The Giver, Brian’s Winter, Hatchet, Number the Stars,  Freak the Mighty

  6. Reading Standards • Key Ideas and Details – Read closely to determine what text says explicitly, make logical inferences and cite specific textual evidence to support conclusions. • Craft and Stucture- Interpret words and phrases. (Figurative, connotation and denotation). Analyze the structure  of text to determine point of view, purpose of content and style of text. Integration of Knowledge- Integrate and evaluate content in diverse media and format. Evaluate an argument and specific claims in a text.Analyze two or more texts that address similar themes or topics. Range of Reading- Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.

  9. Math: Miss Sirianni & Ms. Steffenhagen • Pre-test/Post-test before each math unit • McGraw Hill Math Curriculum • Homework - Any incomplete classwork

Math Standards • Connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems • Completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative number • Writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations • Developing an understanding of statistical thinking

How Parents Can Help… • Often times students will be encouraged to use sense-making strategies to solve mathematical problems. • These strategies will support their growth. • Teachers may delay showing students short cuts or standard algorithms. • Please honor that delay, it is by design to develop a deep understanding of the concept.

  12. Science & Social Sciences:Mrs. Huggins & Mr. Morris  • 2019-2020 - Introduction of new curriculum standards • Science and Social Studies will be integrated and taught in units • Strategy is to develop a deeper understanding of the required 6th grade AZ State Standards

  13. Science • Life Science: Interdependent organisms, adaptations, and ecosystems • Physical Science: system and system models, energy, and matter • Earth Science: Earth, rotation, orbit, solar system • Chandler Innovation Fair: December thru January

  14. Social Sciences • Early Civilizations – Renaissance & Reformation • Civics – Individual Rights and Roles • Economics – How to manage , income spending, investment, global economy • Geography – Geography representations, ie. Maps, graphs, human population movement, and geographic reasonings • History – developemtn of civlilations, societies, cultures, and innovations which have influenced society.  

  15. Grading Scale • 90-100: A • 80-89: B • 70-79: C • 60-69: D • Below 59: F • Effort Grades in Special Areas will only be given twice a year at the end of each semester • Currently the district is using Infinite Campus. You can register and login to see your child’s grades.

  16. Homework • Homework should take between 30- 60 minutes a night. Sixth graders should also read for at least 30 minutes and this is included in the allotted time. • Students should be able to complete homework independently. • Some projects will require extra time and effort but are the most memorable parts of the year. • Homework is just not paper/pencil, they need to be studying for upcoming tests.

  17. Behavior Contract • Behavior Contract for both Pool and Science Camp • No suspensions (school or bus) • No failing grades • Signed agreement by both Parent and Child

  18. Think Time • The first part is designed to allow students time to focus and gain self-control by asking to move to another classroom.  • During this time students will reflect on their behavior and develop a plan to correct the negative behavior.  • The second part involves providing the student with feedback about their behavior and for them to create a plan for future success in the classroom.  • If a student brings home a Think Time Sheet, they must have it signed by the parent or guardian to assure corrective measures have taken place and returned the next day.

  19. Communication • Agenda/Planner    Please check this each night. Parent signatures are not required UNLESS homework becomes a problem. Stamps with the teacher's initials will confirm school work/homework was incomplete. • Infinite Campus Messenger, Microsoft Outlook, and The Remind App • Newsletters • Sent via email/website

  20. Communication Continued…​ • Agenda/Planner (cont.)​ • Students will fill these out each day ​ •     Students are expected to bring their  •       agenda/planner to school each day and they will  •       fill them out each day. •  Parents can refer to their student’s agenda/planner  •       to see if they have missed any homework •       throughout the week and any reminders.

  21. Art Masterpiece Art Masterpiece will be covered by Parent Volunteers. Please Sign Up With Your Teacher If Interested (this may be a shared responsibility in the event there are any conflicts with our dates)

  22. Science Camp • We need parents who can volunteer for the 6th grade Science Camp Adventure to Chapel Rock May 20th -22nd  • Background Check will take some time - complete the Tier III forms and turn them in as soon as possible. • 14 Female Chaperones for the Girls (Min.) • 14 Male Chaperones for the Boys   (Min.) • Science Camp informational meeting: Thursday, August 15th at 5 pm in the Library

  23. Tardiness / Pick Up Early • The first bell rings at 8:25, and we pick students up on the playground. • If students aren’t in the classroom by the time the second bell rings at 8:30, they should check in at the school office before coming to class. • Please be aware of your child’s schedule, it will be easier for the office to locate them, so you can get to your appointment on time.

  24. Field Trips • 6th Science Camp May 20th-22nd • 6th Grade Pool Party (TBD) 

  25. Class Parties • APEX, Winter, and Valentine's parties • 6th grade promotion (May) • 6th grade dance (May) • Treats for the classroom should be purchased and not homemade, and easy to pass out to each child.

  26. TAX CREDIT • Tax Credit dollars are a great way to generate the funds needed for Science Camp ($125).  • Dollar for dollar tax deductible • $250 for single • $400 for married • Please note:  Chaperone Fees are not eligible for tax credit only student fees. • Find it online or forms will be coming home soon.

  27. Haley Yearbooks 2019-2020 School Year Yearbooks will ONLY be purchased online this year.  As more details become available, we will make sure to send on the information. If you have further questions, you may contact Mrs. Quintero. Quintero.Lindsay@cusd80.com Thank you!

APEX FUN RUN2019-2020 • Haley’s ONLY Fundraiser! • Last Year’s Success: Haley profited about $42,000 • $12,000 to Teachers/Grade Levels/Student Council • $8,000 for New Sound System for the Stage • PTO Community Builders • (Bingo / Movie Nights, Sock Hop, Spring Carnival, etc.) • $2,800 Supplies – Student Folders, Car Hangers, etc. • $2,200 Transportation for 6th Grade Science Camp • $900 Classroom Emergency Preparedness Buckets •         Kick-Off is Oct. 16th • FUN RUN OCT. 25th
