Chaparrals are dry areas, usually found in coastal regions. They are found in most of the continents: • West coast of the United States • West coast of South America • Cape Town area of South Africa • Western tip of Australia • Coastal areas of the Mediterranean Location
This biome has many different types of terrain, for example: – flat plains – rocky hills – mountain slopes It’s sometimes used in movies for the "Wild West" Terrain
Temperature & rainfall • Summer • Hot and dry • 40° C • Fires and droughts very common • Winter • Mild and rainy • 10° C • 10-40 inches of precipitations annually (mostly in winter)
Plants & animals • Many plants are drought and fire resistant to cope with the climate. • The most common type of chaparral contains plants like large shrubs, corn oak, and scattered scrub that are densely packed together. • Chaparrals are home to many animals such as grysboks, wild dogs, lynx, ground squirrels, jack rabbits, gophers, skunks, toads, lizards, snakes, and mice, pumas, foxes, owls, eagles, deer, quail, wild goats, spiders, scorpions, and various kinds of insects.
