Surface Phase DiagramsJian Luo, Clemson University, DMR 0448879 Via the support of a CAREER award, researchers in South Carolina have investigated a unique class of surface films that form spontaneously with a self-selecting thickness on the order of one nanometer. These surface films can be treated as a “surface phase”, which exhibits thermodynamic stability that defers from any bulk phases. For example, nanoscale quasi-liquid surface films can form at thermodynamic equilibration well below the bulk solidus line where the corresponding bulk liquid phase is no longer stable; an example is shown in the figure. Consequently, surface phase diagrams are constructed. This study enriched the fundamental surface science and suggested many potential applications. A Surface Phase Diagram: A nanometer-thick, Bi2O3-based, liquid-like, “surface phase” forms spontaneously on ZnO(11-20) surfaces, and its thermodynamic stability differs substantially from that of a bulk liquid phase. Line of constant film thicknesses are plotted in the binary phase diagram.
