  2. Bail • A sum of money used as a security deposit to ensure that an accused person returns for his or her trial

  3. Suffrage • The right to vote

  4. Petition • A formal request for government action • A process by which candidates who are not affiliated with on of the two major parties can get on the ballot for the general election in most states

  5. Double Jeopardy • Putting someone on trial for a crime of which he or she was previously acquitted

  6. Slander • Spoken untruths that are harmful to someone’s reputation

  7. Treason • The Constitution of the United States, (Article III) defines treason against the United States to consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid or comfort • This offence is punished with death • By the same article of the Constitution, no person shall be convicted of treason, unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court

  8. Libel • Written untruths that are harmful to someone’s reputation

  9. Symbolic Speech • A form of speech that expresses an idea or emotion without use of words, such as burning one’s draft card, bra, or flag, or picketing • Such activities are protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution

  10. Eminent Domain • The right of the government to take private property for public use

  11. Search Warrant • A court order allowing law enforcement officers to search a suspect’s home or business and take specific items as evidence

  12. Judicial Review • The power of the Supreme Court to say whether any federal, state, or local law or government action goes against the Constitution (unconstitutional)

  13. Poll Tax • A sum of money required of voters before they are permitted to cast a ballot

  14. Espionage • the practice of spying or using spies to obtain information about the plans and activities especially of a foreign government or a competing company

  15. Pardon • Presidential power to allow a convicted criminal to go free
