  3. Defining Socialization • a lifelong process of learning how to act as a member of a society • FOR EXAMPLE, an infant develops into a functioning social being who is aware of expected behaviors and he/she emerges with a personality

  4. Defining Personality • a relatively consistent pattern of ATTITUDES, VALUES, and modes of PERCEPTION which account, in part, for the individual’s consistency of BEHAVIOR.

  5. Linking Socialization and Personality • Personality is a PRODUCT of Socialization

  6. Linking Socialization, Attitudes and Behaviors • Personality being a PRODUCT of socialization makes attitudes and behaviors as PRODUCTS ALSO of socialization.

  7. Major Agencies of Socialization (The FERGE) • F amily • E ducation (or School) • R eligion (or Church) • G overnment • E conomy (or Market)

  9. FAMILY • the MAIN LINK between the child and society and is the first, closest, most influential social group in one’s life.

  10. EDUCATION • the FORMAL AGENCY for weaning from home and introducing a person into the society.

  11. RELIGION • provides SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE, norms of conduct, and rules of behavior set forth by the religious organization.

  12. GOVERNMENT • regulates behaviors as it REGULATES allocation of labor and industry, reproductive decisions of couples, and public welfare.

  13. ECONOMY • has important implications on habits, skills, knowledge, expectation, motivation, aspiration and ideology.
