  1. Socialization How we become functioning members of society

  2. What is SOCIALIZATION? • Socialization allows new members of a society to learn the accepted ways of behaving • All humans grow up in a social environment - through our social contact we learn how to think and act • This process is called socialization

  3. Now, let’s return to the Nature versus Nurture Debate… How much of an individual’s development and behaviour are products of nature (heredity) or nurture (socialization and environment)?

  4. NATUREsociologists who support this argument rely heavily on twin studies • Examine studies where twins were raised apart • Main argument: if nurture is more influential than nature, twins should be significantly different in personal traits, behaviours, and abilities, but this is not the case • Example Study: Jerry Levey and Jim Tedesco

  5. NURTUREsociologists who support this argument rely heavily on the studies of isolated, or feral, children • Main argument: while twin studies show similarities beyond just the physical traits, they also show differences in values and attitude • The way they are raised impacts their values and attitudes • Children who grow up isolated and “unsocialized” show physical, social, and emotional problems • Example Study: Anna – locked in her room between the ages of 1 and 6
