Vital Sign Response to Ice Water By: Krista Fulkerson and Kara Morris
Introduction • Our blood pressure is influenced by sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. • The sympathetic system regulates blood pressure. • Baroreceptors influence the parasympathetic nervous system to restore homeostasis.
In this experiment… • Changes in temperature impact vital signs. • The cold stimulus will serve as an unpleasant stimulus activating the “fight or flight” response.
Null Hypothesis • The ice bath will no effect on the vital signs.
Method • Thirty students at MCHS will be tested. • The subjects will fill out a background questionnaire. • Blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen level will be recorded before and after the ice bath using a Blood Pressure Monitor and an Oxygen Sensor.
Method Cont. • Subject’s feet will be submerged in an ice bath for one minute and then removed. • Blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels will be recordedand analyzed.
