Management as skills Our course argues that the best account of management (for our purposes) is that management is a set of skills.
Management as skills Which skills ? Competencies probably just another name for skill but has a jargon of its own (the competency approach to management) Kinds of skills Practical skills Intellectual – thinking – cognitive - mind
Management as skills Analysis of those who manage suggests that the key to management is the skill of decision-making. Managers make decisions! This is the best generalisation we can give. Your course focuses on management as decision-making. It is, thus, about the cognitive skills that relate to practical situations.
The scope of management In what activities do managers practice the skills of decision-making? What are the concerns of practical managers?
The business environment This is an “organisational” perspective. How do you relate this to the skills of decision-making?

The academic literature To write an academic paper you need to know what has been said before about your topic. Your paper must show how your work builds upon the work of others. Students seldom appreciate how long it takes to "read up" on a topic. You have to prepare yourself before you can even begin to write. You must make use of published academic materials - this means books and journals, historical material and recent publications.
An academic library You are expected to use the library – this is an academic library. There are specific skills that you need to develop that relate to library use. These include: How to search academic databases How to keep track of the relevant materials you find How to create a bibliography How to gain some understanding of an article without reading every word. The most important part of the library is the academic databases which the library provides online.
