General information • Hosted by Ministry for Agriculture and Land Affairs of South Africa • 180 international delegates • Theme: Engaging Emerging Economies • Special plenary session on SDI development in Africa • Many interesting papers were presented • Available at www.gsdi.org web site 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

  3. Steering Committee • Establish global umbrella organisation • Develop business case for SDI development • Support transitional initiatives (PC for GIS Infrastructure for Americas, Africa and Middle East) • Establish working groups (Operations: produced Cookbook; Technical; Communication and Awareness; Legal and Economic 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

  4. Recommendations • GSDI Steering Committee shall document case studies as next step in the development of the business case. • Terms of reference for the legal and economic working group are accepted and Prof. Harlan Onsrud should be invited to join the group as co-chair 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

  5. Resolutions • Establish a secretariat of staff from more nations to provide a continuous level of support • GSDI will provide a level of outreach and education to raise national awareness and deploy resources to help developments consistent with global infrastructures 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

  6. Agreements • GSDI Steering Committee accepted the invitation of Colombia to host the 5th GSDI conference in May 2001 • Consensus for rotation the conferences to other regions with GSDI 6th to be coordinated by EUROGI and held in Europe end 2002 or early 2003 • GSDI accepts invitation for class A liasion to ISO/TC 211 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

  7. Observations • GSDI focus on thematic domains e.g. disaster and crisis management • more initiatives of Europe are needed e.g. contribution to GSDI cookbook 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

  8. Observations • Debate on GSDI similar to EGII • coordination • identification of core data • data access and discovery • legal and economic issues 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop

  9. European initiatives • use the outcomes of the GSDI conference at Cape Town to • Help development of the European Spatial Data Infrastructure (ESDI) • prepare an ESDI cookbook related to and input for the global debate (GSDI Cookbook) 6th EC-GI&GIS Workshop
