What is schizophrenia? • Schizophrenia is a mental health disorder that exhibit signs of unusual emotional response and thought process • Schizophrenia is a universal disorder, however the symptoms varyacross culture • Schizophrenia emerges when an individual enters their young adulthood • Individuals that are born in the winter or early spring are more likely to develop schizophrenia, than individuals that are born in the summer or fall

  3. Thesis of research essay In my research essay, I will be discussing about how schizophrenics display hallucination in developed and developing countries.

Hallucination differences and similarity • Schizophrenics show signs of hallucination when they hear voices of people • that they know • Auditory hallucinations are more common than gustatory hallucinations • West African countries have a high rate of auditory hallucination • Austria has a low rate of auditory hallucination, but a high rate of visual • hallucination • Schizophrenics in developed countries show a high frequency of depressive • symptoms

Hallucination differences and similarity • Schizophrenics in developing countries show a high frequency of visual and • directed auditory hallucination • Individuals that are not diagnosed with schizophrenia but show signs of • delusions and auditory hallucinations indicate that these symptoms are • not necessarily signs of schizophrenia • Antipsychotic is highly effective in reducing hallucinations in schizophrenics

Differences across culture • Schizophrenia is defined in a dissimilar manner based on the culture • Schizophrenia is more severe in developed countries than in developing • countries due to different belief systems • Schizophrenia rarely occurs in developing countries • Disorders in developing countries are believed to have arisen from • supernatural forces • Disorders in developed countries are believed to have arisen from a • biological illness within the individual

Differences across culture • Psychiatrists treat schizophrenics based on social norm • Psychiatrists can be influenced by their own culture or by the culture or race • of their patient • When individuals migrate to a country where they become minorities, they are • more prone to develop schizophrenia • Individuals from a low socioeconomic class are more prone to develop • schizophrenia
