THE BIG QUESTION… How do we become allergic to things?
What Are Allergies? • An exaggerated immune response or reaction or to substances that are generally not harmful • Common symptoms include: • rashes • hives • itching • nasal congestion • red, itchy, watery eyes
Sensitization • Allergens (usually mold and/or spores) come in contact with skin • T-cells recognize allergen as foreign and release chemicals • Chemicals instruct B-cells to produce IgE antibodies • Some antibodies attach to mast cells
When the Allergen Comes Back… • When allergen binds to IgE cells • Mast cells release histamine
Histamine • Chemical released by mast cells • Causes asthma and allergy symptoms • Makes blood vessels leak, causing inflammation • Inflammation causes: warmth and swelling of the skin Itchy, watery eyes
Histamine (continued) • Causes sneezing and increased mucus production in the nasal cavity and airways • Causes nasal drip (runny nose) • Causes post-nasal drip (into the throat) • Causes a cough • Tightening of smooth muscle in the airways
