Inquiry Project Katie Olufs, MadiePodgorski, Kyle Nelson
THE BIG QUESTION How do you break culture barriers to create connections between students?
Why we chose it? • Madie • Nora • Katie • Students at NWHS • Classroom divided: blacks vshispanics • Kyle • Witnessed classroom divisions in his field experiences
What we did: • Researched theories • Researched strategies • Interviewed ENL teachers
What we discovered: • To create the best classroom environment, teachers should explore all perspectives • Community • Identity • Culture • Relationship building = most important part of creating a comfortable classroom environment • Importance of Norms posted in the classroom • Respect • Listen to each other
Common Barriers/ How to break them • Identity • Obvious differences: skin color, • Look for similarities instead of differences • Cultural • Use books to break prejudices • Language/ communication barrier • Genuine efforts/ attempts to communicate
Barriers according to Interviews • Race • Conflicts/tension between different races: African-americansand Hispanics. • Misconceptions/ misunderstandings • Stereotypes • Insensitive comments
How to create community • Set norms in the beginning and stick to them. • Recognize and appreciate all cultures • Represent their heritage on classroom walls • Best to confront issues of diversity, race and class in the context of their curriculum • Teach collaboration • Team work/ Group work
Interviewer’s Community • What does not reflect community • “I also have one Chinese student with all of my Latino students. I struggle with making him feel comfortable and not forgotten. It is easy to get carried away with studying/talking/exploring Latino issues/history/culture/etc • Have seen this at NCHS- two girls from Thailand • International Club • International Festival in May • decorate display cases and bulletin boards to educate students about specific holidays and/or cultural happenings from around the world. • I send out an “ESL tip of the week” and often give suggestions for incorporating ESL students in the classroom.
