Fourth Regional Workshop and Training on CD4CDMAsian Institute of Technology, Bangkok,4-6 April 2005 Case Study 1 Process Waste Gas Recovery and Combustion for Electricity Generation in Grid Connected Power Plants (NM0071) Review Comments on Application of Methodology Presented by Ouk Navann, Team Leader for Awareness Raising, CD4CDM Project Ministry of Environment, Cambodia
General Description of Project Activity • The technology applied to the project activity is designed to capture, store and stabilize, and deliver basic oxygen furnace (BOF) gas to the power plant(s). • The project activity envisages to develop a BOF gas grid for collection and distribution of the excess BOF gases.
Conditions under which the Methodology Is Applicable • The methodology is applicable to steel production plants using basic oxygen furnace (BOF). • Legislation does not mandate the utilisation of waste gases from steel manufacturing process.
Conditions under which the Methodology Is Applicable • There are only two possible alternatives: continued flaring of excess waste gases over and above the internal consumption, or its use for power generation. • Waste gas composition and heat characteristics are measurable.
Conditions under which the Methodology Is Applicable • Part of the waste gas generated during the steel manufacturing operation are used for meeting internal heating requirements. • Project activities will not induce diversion of waste gases required for internal usage for generation of power and replacing the shortfall with other energy sources.
Applicability of the Methodology Across Project Types and Regions • The methodology is sector specific, only applicable to steel plants using basic oxygen steel furnace. • The methodology is applicable only if there is no national legislation mandating the use of waste gases. • The methodology uses publicly available data for national/regional grids. • The methodology is not applicable to Cambodia, as there is no steel industry in the country, nor gas distribution network.
