Communication’s Across Dept. • DOM Experience @NUMC-New York. • 11 Divisions-33 consultants-200 plus staff and trainees. • Monthly DOM meeting—introduced rotational research presentations. • Hem/Onc and ID interaction—Coagulation disorders.
Student’s—My Experience. • Stony Brook Faculty 1971-2011-Few thousand medical students. • P.D-QHC NY--pulmonary-10 yrs-60 plus • Chair Medicine NUMC 12 yrs-300 plus-- • KFMC 5yrs—3yrs student exchange. • 60 + consultants, 300 +internists, exchange KFMC/FOM, examiner Jordan.
Overseas Student Experience • Jordan—Exchange students @ NUMC • BHNC Trainees from Kashmir @ KFMC • ACP International Fellowship Program. • Cultural & Language Challenges. • Edited a book dealing :IMG’s in USA—Guide for Applicants and Program Directors—Published by ACP.
Majmah Student-FK as Student. • Disciplinary Problem in 6th grade-innovative solution-skipped a grade. • Stony Brook 1st batch 1971—PBL curriculum, focus on Chest. • Teaching session—feedback at session. • Outcome—Teacher of the year. • Jordan Experience as examiner –Brucellosis.
Student Skills-Supervisors Role • Clear about role & responsibilty. • Is available 24/7, Is approachable-ex “Feel free to call me at any time” rather than “Call me when there is a problem”. • Sets example by ‘doing’ and not just “saying”. FK to DOM:”I will never ask you to do something which I will not do myself.”

Contemporary Views Regarding Program/Student Evaluation • Many different strategies may be employed, however all evaluation methods are prone to bias reducing reliability. • Thus the importance of multiple evaluations by different evaluators which collectively can provide strong evidence regarding curriculum evaluation.
Student with “Problems” • Problem is the: • ?Student- ?System ?Supervisor. • Good Supervisors Qualities: • Clear about role & responsibilty • Is available 24/7, Is approachable-ex “Feel free to call me at any time” rather than “Call me when there is a problem”
Problem Student? • Does he/she really belong in this field? • What is the ‘home’ situation like? • Are there any health related issues—professionals do get sick.(Bipolar,Dysl.) • Any underlying financial/marital issues? • Ex—Clerk at NUMC refused to take clerkship exam--? Why.
Bottom Line • Motivated, inquisitive interested student. • Interested, respectful, compassionate, competent teacher/guide/mentor. • The educational system needs a total overhaul and revisit if our community wants to compete at international level.
