Team objectives We support the growth and development of London through 2 key objectives: • Creating a resource efficient city: • Improving energy and water efficiency • Utilising waste as a resource • Creating a resilient, greener city • Improving London’s air quality • Increasing resilience to extreme weather • Enhancing green infrastructure
Working with bids • A call to action – introducing 4 projects where we are working or want to work with BIDs: • FoodSave • Greening the BIDs • Business Energy Challenge
Providing free support to 240 food SMEs to reduce food waste, divert surplus food to good purposes & manage unavoidable food waste more sustainably. Funded by Mayor of London, ERDF and LWARB, and GLA is working with two delivery partners: Restaurants, hotels, pubs, quick service restaurants and canteens Food retailers, manufacturers, street food vendors, markets, wholesalers and food growers
Business benefits • Free support • Understanding of food waste • Potential cost savings • Improved efficiency • Improved CSR • Results so far • The first 15 hospitality businesses supported: • Prevented an average of 1.6 tonnes of food waste per year • Saved on average of over £6,000 per year
Opportunities for BIDs to get involved: • Make businesses in your area aware of FoodSave opportunities through communications • Introduce the FoodSave team to food SMEs in your area • Hold a FoodSave event or invite the FoodSave team to present at an existing event Website: www.london.gov.uk/foodsave Contact: Lisa Bennett, FoodSave Project Manager lisa.bennett@london.gov.uk/ 0207 983 4920
Greening the bids • Mayoral project to deliver green infrastructure in BIDs and employer partnerships, in conjunction with CRP. • Green infrastructure includes street trees, green roofs, rain gardens, pocket parks etc • Increases resilience to extreme weather • Ensures London remains an attractive place in which to live, work and invest. • To date we have worked with BIDs in central London to undertake 15 GI Audits, to identify opportunities for greening: • Over 300 rain gardens • 200 + green walls • More than 100ha of green roofs
Greening the bids • We are supporting BIDs to deliver GI: • Funding for 15 demonstration projects (7 completed), 25% GLA funded • Advice and guidance to facilitate many more projects • This is helping to meet Mayor’s target to increase green cover in the CAZ by 5% by 2030. • To find out how undertaking a GI Audit and being part of Greening the BIDs could help you: Contact: Matthew.thomas@london.gov.uk Free Best Practice Guide: http://www.victoriabid.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/BestPracticeGuide_A4-10.pdf
