ENERGY • £1 Million Salix/HEFCE won for energy efficiency • Completion of the metering project at non-residential buildings • Display Energy Certificates for main campus buildings • Keith Greener – Energy Manager - commences in post in May 2009 • Combined Heat & Power feasibility completed & approved by ESC subject to finance paper
WASTE • Recycling scheme saved £25,000 last year and is on target to achieve £40,000 this year – recycling rate is maintained at c.50% by weight • 3 full waste audits of recycling scheme show contamination is mainly in student areas • Golden Bin Challenge – more comms work is needed • Waste contract changed and inefficient sub-contractors removed – in progress • Clinical waste review and new procedures to maintain compliance
BIODIVERSITY/LAND MANAGEMENT • Review commenced in July 2009 • SINC site in need of management work • Biofuel boiler grant application for Percy Gee • CHP partnership work in Estates Dept leading to project approval • Library won local green award CONSTRUCTION/REFURBISHMENT
TRANSPORT • Sustainable Travel Officer (Dr Sandra Lee) recruited • Full desktop and site audit of water use at non-residential sites due to commence soon WATER
CSR ISSUES • Fairtrade Fortnight celebrated with assistance from student volunteers • Approximately 500 hours of student volunteer time used this year for waste auditing, communications, allotment project etc. • Green League Table results will be in published in THE next Thursday 18th June
Other Developments • Environmental Strategy first draft • ‘Universities that Count’ – environmental reporting process – results out soon • Green League submission
Achievements this year • Received Green Apple Awards for BGW and the recycling scheme • Sound Impact Awards – Student Union achieved a ‘silver’ award this year • Recognised again for our ‘Positive Contribution to the Environment’ by the Leicester Environment P’ship • Sponsored by Everards – p’ship with them to continue
