Adjective= a word, phrase or clause that describes/modifies a noun Types of adjectives: • articles: a, an, the (Note: a/an must match the following word.) • possessives: my, the teacher’s, John’s • quantity/count: one, first, fifth, 100th • quality/opinion: beautiful, ugly, important, unimportant, cool • size: big, small, large, little, tall, short, fat, skinny • age: old, young, new, ancient, three-year-old • condition/shape: broken, ripped, fresh, cracked. square, round • color: red, orange, purple, green, dark, light • Proper adj./origin/nationality: American, English, Southern • purpose/material: wooden, plastic, sport, academic, business
Grammar Rules! 16. Where do we place adjectives in a sentence? • SUBJECT + “to be” VERB + ADJECTIVE. • The kitten is cute. The kitten cute is. • Before a NOUN (ADJECTIVE + NOUN + Action VERB) • The cute kitten plays. The kitten cute runs. 17. How do we order and punctuate lists of adjectives before nouns? • Order: article/possessive quantity, quality/opinion, size, age, shape/condition, color, origin, purpose/material NOUN • Punctuation: In a list of adjectives, place commas between all the adjectives EXCEPT articles/possessives. No comma before noun. The, black, cute, five, kittens play all day.
