Although Oshawa is not known as a tourist destination, there are many things to do around the city. The next time you need a break from studying, check out one of these fun ideas.
1. Canadian Automotive Museum Previously a car dealership, the Canadian Automotive Museum is now one of the top attractions in Oshawa. It is home to a number of Canadian-made vehicles, some of which date back more than a century.
2. Robert McLaughlin Gallery Budding artists need to visit the Robert McLaughlin Gallery. In total, there are more than 4,500 works of art, all contemporary or modern paintings, sculptures, and prints.
3. Waterfront Trail Waterfront Trail starts from Niagara-on-the-Lake and runs more than 1,500 kilometers. It runs through Oshawa, along the Lake Ontario shoreline. You can easily walk or cycle for long stretches of the trail.
4. Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm Around 50 species of animals live at Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm, including camels, monkeys, wallabies, and domestic animals like mini donkeys, goats, and pigs. Many of the residents are abandoned or injured animals who have been rescued by the zoo.
5. Swimming Pools Swimmers are spoilt for choice in Oshawa. Both Donevan Pool and Civic Recreation Complex Pool have indoor pools and the latter also has a diving board and sauna. There’s also Rotary Pool, a heated outdoor pool. If you’re looking for fun, though, you should probably pick Legends Centre Pool, as it has water slides, a lazy river, and a beach.
6. Attend a Sports Game Whatever the season, a sports event is likely taking place in Oshawa. The city has hockey, lacrosse, football, basketball, and rugby teams.
7. McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve With 11 trails stretching for 7 kilometres, there’s plenty to explore in McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve. During dry weather, grassy trails are ideal. At other times of the year, you have gravel and wood paths. Be sure to head out to the viewpoints to see the most scenic parts of the reserve.
Wouldn’t it be great if you could find fun activities onsite at your Durham College off-campus housing? You can when you live in Village Suites Oshawa, which always has rooms for rent in Oshawa. Students can enjoy amenities like a theatre and recreation centre complete with billiards, ping pong, and foosball. If you want to stay healthy, there’s a fitness centre and yoga room. All these are available at no extra cost.
