SQ3R? Survey Question Read Recite Review
What is SQ3R? • A way to study for tests • A process for reviewing notes • An activity that simulates memory • A study technique
Survey Before you start to read, look over the pages in the chapter or section. • Titles • Subtitles • Previews • Italicized & Boldface words • Pictures & Captions
Question Starting with the first section of the chapter, write a question for each subheading in the section. Begin your questions with: • Who, what, when, where • How, why, should, could, would If you are studying alone, write your questions down.
Read Read the section. • Now, you are reading with a PURPOSE. • You are looking for the answers to the questions you have made up!
Recite • Ask yourself the questions and recite the answers WITHOUT looking back at the reading. • Then write the answer to each question so that you will have notes to study.
Review • Don’t forget to check your answers against each section. These notes will come in handy as you prepare for your test. • Go over your questions later to make sure that you can still recall the answers. Recall questions are a common part of many tests. • If necessary, use your notes for help. Review the questions the following day, and again in a week. • If you review regularly, you will probably remember the material for a long time.
