My 2.0 Journey 21st Century Skills: A Work in Progress Ruthie Miller Sharon, MA January 2010
Here is the start of technology—or pretty close to it—in the Sharon Public Schools. Just a few exaggerations by Ms. Miller here—only one teacher fell out of her chair while trying to turn on the computer. But we were collectively pretty pathetic. The Beginning—Technology SkillsAt the start of this class, I was using email, live streaming, and a personal computer. I had started a class website, but didn’t know how to do much with it. It wasn’t available to students yet. I knew next to nothing about other 2.0 tools—wasn’t even familiar with the term. Below is my “School Dude” request to fix my phone. It sums up my technology savvy from the outset.
From the start, the concepts came at me, making about as much sense as the Wordle below. http://www.wordle.net/.
At a certain point, it was necessary to evaluate what might be useful for me personally and what might be beneficial but not right for me at this point in my personal and professional career. In general, I stayed clear of tools which sent me information. I feel like I have enough coming at me already. I could see my interest in an information gathering tools, such as Google Reader increasing should I research something specific or chose an issue to stay absolutely current on. Here, Mr. Stripes helps me sort through these issues. Click on the picture to view the movie. Should the movie fail to play, follow the link for help. http://rgmlearningsummary2010.wikispaces.com/
I like to write, so one aspect that instantly made sense to me was blogging. I have some stories I’ve always wanted to tell. Once this class is over, I’ll have an audience of two—but the writing is good for me. It is likely I’ll continue! Click on the hyperlink to view the blog. http:///ruthie-gwenmiller.blogspot.com
We learn about fun tools like Comic maker that can help students create and express their knowledge. The previous panel was made from that site. From the start, the importance of the learning community to our learning was stressed. We experience this both by connecting with on line Nings and with sharing our experiences with class sites and tools, both in person and through blogs and chats.
The skills I learned in this class helped me to finish and use a team website I’d started two years ago but never made active with my students. • On December 1 of this year, I launched a team website. Learning how to embed into a wiki made it easy to transfer the skills to a website format. I’ve also incorporated Animoto into the site. Follow the link to my website. This final Xtranormal video summarizes my learning and what I’m looking forward to. • http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/5931103
