  1. English IV September 25th/27th 2013

  2. Warm-up • Please write about a person from Hari’s memoir, The Translator, who takes significant action to change the outcome of a situation. Please use details from the text to support your answer? • I have extra copies of both chapters “The Dead Nile,” and “A Call From the Road” if you need to re-read.

  3. Example: • DaoudHari takes significant action to change the outcome of the fate of his people by writing his memoir The Translator. Hari is one of the few people from his village who survived a brutal attack to wipe out his entire race. After surviving and seeing the brutal attacks to his people, he devotes his life to translating for any foreign reporters who wish to interview the people of Darfur about the genocide occurring. This is a significant action because by translating and braving trips into a very dangerous area, Hari is risking his life. Through his efforts and those of the people reporting, Hari has been able to educate many people about what has been happening in Darfur and bring aid to his family, friends and region.

  4. Short-Constructed Response: What every excellent Paragraph needs – Toulmin Model • Claim – clear answer to the question being asked. • Warrant – supporting details and appropriate textual evidence to support the claim. • Impact – Explaining HOW the textual evidence supports the claim • Conclusion – the “wrap up” that refers back to the claim.

  5. Writing a character analysis • When writing a character analysis you may be asked to describe a number of things. • Here are a few things you may be asked to do and, how to do them!

  6. Character Analysis- Personality traits • When you write a character analysis you will be expected to write about a characters personality. • We get to know characters in stories by: • Their Attitudes • Their Actions/Behaviors • Their Appearance • Their Thoughts & Feelings • Their Words

  7. Examples of personality Traits • Eager • Sneaky • Deceptive • Intelligent • Courageous • Brave • Emotional • Faithful • Fearless • stubborn

  8. Character Analysis – Role of a character • In a character analysis you may be asked to define a character(s) ROLE in the story • Characters fill certain roles in a story • They either play a major role (central to a story) or a minor role (serve as a supporting role)

  9. Protagonist: Main character. The plot revolves around the main character. There may be more than one main character. Ex.) Lion King = Simba Ex.) The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn –Huck Finn Antagonist: The character who represents a challenge or obstacle to the protagonist(s). It may not always be a person! Ex.) Lion King – Scar: Scar forces Simba to flee creating an obstacle for Simba because he will no longer be king. Ex.) The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn –Society is the antagonist with its unfair laws and rules. Society is the OBSTACLE to Huck’s development as a person

  10. Foil • Is a character who provides a contrast to the main character (protagonist), in order to emphasize the main characters traits. • Ex.) In Cinderella the step sisters would be the foils because they are so hideous, ungraceful and mean they make Cinderella look so beautiful and sweet. • Ex.) In The Christmas Carol Fred, Scrooge’s kind nephew is the foil to evil, nasty Scrooge.

  11. Character analysis – Character development (growth and change) • You may also be asked to describe and analyze how a character changes and grows over time. • Most characters go through changes over the course of a story!

  12. Character analysis • In a character analysis paragraph you may be asked to do any or all of these types of analysis. • It is your job to decide who the characters are, what they do, how they grow and change and provide EVIDENCE from the text to prove it!

  13. Thinking in Threes Choose a category to analyze Choose three specific examples Write details for each box

  14. Character Analysis: The Translator • Courageous • Risks his life to get out stories of genocide • Fearless • Stays calm even when he has a gun pointed at his head DaoudHari – character analysis • Intelligent • He knows the right people to call, right ways to go to stay alive

  15. In DaoudHari’s memoir The Translator, Hari is a courageous and fearless man who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals (Claim). In the first chapter “A Call from the Road,” Hari is on a mission to take a British reporter into Darfur to get vital interviews. By obtaining these interviews Hari will be able to get the stories of the genocide in Darfur out to the world. On page three Hari states “Survivors told us of villages surrounded at night by men with torches and machine guns, the killing of men, women, and children, the burning of people alive…”(Warrant 1)In such a terrible and dangerous region most people would just try to avoid conflict and death; but Hari is courageous enough to face the people who kill his people in order to bring them help from the world (impact 1). When Hari and the reporter are stopped by rebel troops Hari shows his fearlessness in the face of imminent death. The leader of the rebel troop is holding a gun to his head and Hari tries to calmly tell Philip (the British reporter) what is going on, “They think I am a spy, and they are going to shoot the gun and it will make y head explode, so you should stand away.” When being held at gun point most people would be begging and crying and breaking down(Warrant Two). Hari is fearless and remains calm, even politely asking the reporter to step away(impact 2)There are not many people in this world who would show such courage and fearlessness when trying to reach a goal. There is much to be learned from DaoudHari and the way he lives his life. (conclusion)

  16. Assignment • Read the first two chapters of Kevin Connolly’s memoir Double Take. • As you are reading, highlight or underline each of the main character’s different personality traits, attitudes, and appearances and write explanations in the margins (Mom, Dad, Kevin) • Then write a one paragraph character analysis on three of the main characters identifying one trait for each character.

  17. Assignment • Write a character analysis identifying 1 character trait for 3 of the main characters. • Use the “Think in Threes” method to brainstorm – you only need one piece of textual evidence • Please use the Toulmin model to structure your paragraph. (Claim, Warrants, Impacts) • Make sure you use TEXTUAL EVIDENCE (warrants) to support your analysis. • Make sure you use your best handwriting, grammar, punctuation, etc.
