1. Foreign Language Fair Presented by BYU
2. What? The graduating students of the Foreign Language Departments at BYU put on a fair for foreign language students in the second year or higher from all over Utah.
3. When? This year the fair is scheduled for Thursday, April 19th, 2007. It is a “Reading Day” for students preparing for their final exams.
4. Where? The Spanish Fair is held at the Wilkinson Center, which is a large, centrally located building on the BYU campus. There is an arcade, bowling alley, food court, juice bar, and a huge book store with souvenirs
5. Why? The Department deans and students of BYU want to do something fun and educational for young language learners.
It is an awesome opportunity to use what you have learned.
6. How? Our fourth term project presentation will double as an audition. There will be an optional sign-up sheet for those of you who are interested. After everyone has presented, those of you who will represent South Davis Junior High School well, will be invited.

8. Humorous Story Students will perform individually
The story idea may be taken from any source, but must be told by the student in his or her own words and within his or her own range of language ability
Teachers may help with grammar, vocabulary, and expression
9. Humorous Story The story is to be memorized
The story should be 2 - 3 min long
Students will be judged on projection, pronunciation, ability to put over punch lines effectively, conformity to time limit
There will be no questions from judges
10. Humorous Story There is an old story of the teacher preparing her students for a visit by a school official who will talk to them in Spanish. The teacher primes a student to answer anticipated questions in the following sequence:
1. How old are you? 14 years
2. How long have you studied Spanish? 2 years
Which do you like most, conversation or grammar? Both
Of course, the official asks the questions in another sequence:
1. How long have you studied Spanish? 14 years
2. How old are you? 2 years
3. Either you are taking me for a fool or you’re pulling my leg! Both
11. Prepared Talk The student must select a topic and prepare a talk in Spanish
The teacher may correct the grammar or suggest vocabulary
The talk is to last from 2 to 3 min
The talk is to be memorized
Students will be judged on content, pronunciation, expression, time limit, and responses to questions

13. Prepared Talk The student should introduce themselves and announce the subject of the talk. For example:
“Soy Juan Monopatines y voy a hablar sobre la influencia de lo indígena en la vida mexicana.”
14. Poetry Recitation Students are to select a poem from those in their level
They must have the poem memorized

16. Poetry Recitation Students should begin by introducing themselves and the name and author of the poem they will recite
“Me llamo Manolo Metepatas, y voy a recitar... ‘Canción del Jinete’ por Federico García Lorca.”
17. Show and Tell The student will bring an object to talk about. It can be a piece of ‘realia’ (an authentic object from the foreign culture), a picture, a model, an object the student has made, a sandbox city, a game or any other object

The presentation is to be memorized
It should last between 2 & 3 min
The student will be judged on projection, self expression, time limit, content, pronunciation, and responses
19. Show and Tell Show a corn tortilla and tell how it is made and how it is the base of many Mexican dishes. Show how it can serve as a bread, a spoon, a napkin, etc
Show a model or floor plan of a Spanish home and point out how it is arranged
20. Skit Performance Any number of students may participate
The total presentation should not exceed 10 minutes
One student should introduce the group and title of the skit at the beginning
21. Skit Performance The skit group will be responsible for bringing all props, costumes, and any other equipment needed
Skits will be judged on staging, time, proficiency, projection & pronunciation
Parts should be memorized

23. Language Bowl A team consists of five members
All questions will be asked in Spanish and will be appropriate to each level
It is a tournament-style competition
There are no materials to study
24. Language Bowl 40% grammar
Ex. --Ponga esta frase en el futuro: “Ando hasta la plaza.” (Ans. Voy a andar hasta la plaza.)
30% geography, history, culture, current events
Ex. --żCuál es la capital del Perú? (Ans. Lima)
30% vocabulary, refranes, modismos
Ex. --żCómo se dice en espańol “the umbrella”?
(Ans. el paraguas)
25. Espańolandia Using the “Visitor’s Guide”, pretend you and your friends are visiting a Spanish-speaking country where you must not speak English
You must use official currency to buy things
You will need to complete at least 7 activities

27. To the bus! After you and your friends have completed your short presentation and visited Espańolandia, you may eat, shop and visit other areas of the Wilkinson Center
