Development of Thermodynamics The science of Thermodynamics was developed in the 1600s and 1700s when Europe went through a “Little Ice Age.” During this time, temperatures were lower than they had been in one thousand years. People had to stay warm to stay alive. Therefore, they devoted their time to the study of heat, thermodynamics.
3. The Kinetic-Molecular Theory Description of matter as being made up of extremely small particles in constant motion
Replaced the caloric theory
Particles move faster in a hot body and therefore have higher energy levels
4. Energy related to heat Sum of the potential and kinetic energies of an object Cold bodies don’t have as much thermal energy as hot bodies Ex. A pan of boiling water would have more thermal energy than a pan of ice water
