Data Standardsand Build 3b Plans Steve Hughes MC Face-to-Face UCLA, Los Angeles, CA November 28-29, 2012
Topics • Summary of Progress to Date • Build 3b • Shift of Focus • Plans and Tasks
Summary of Progress to Date • The core PDS4 data standards have matured enough so that they can be considered stable. • Froze version 0.3.0.0.a of the schema and schematron files on 9/19 in preparation for System Build 3a • Consists of the data standards under PDS and OPS stewardship. • Released to the discipline nodes and the IPDA in order to continue testing and working with missions • Allows discipline nodes to start migration • Documents and schemas are available at http://pds.nasa.gov/pds4
Summary of Progress to Date (cont) • Continued the design and implementation of data standards under discipline and mission stewardship. • Released prototype Version 1.5 of the Local Data Dictionary Tool (LDDTool). • LDDTool parses a LDD definition and creates an XML schema and other operational files • Addressed issues from PDS discipline node and IPDA testing of the data standards
Data Standards RFA Statuses • Most IMPLEMENTED statuses will change to DELIVERED at Build 3b • Outstanding RFAs • PENDING example - Nomenclature consistency issues such as UnitOfMeasure_* • POSTPONED example - Validation of local_identifier uniqueness and referential integrity in labels
Build 3b • Shift of Focus • Plans and Tasks
Shift of Focus • The DDWG has shifted its focus to Discipline Level development • Begin formal standards change process for the core model • Wide spread testing and usage underway • Re-address change management • The DDWG is scaling back the weekly telecon to one hour • Agenda consists primarily of status reports from taks and migration issues • Decisions requiring a working group vote
Defined Tasks for the Next Release • PDS4 Document (Alignment/Synchronization) • Discipline Level Extensions • Geometry • Cartography • Array_3D_Spectrum • Core (pds and ops) Version 0.3.1.0.b • New local data dictionary (LDD) schema • Updates to model resulting from problem resolutions
Build 3b Tasks Title: PDS4 Document (Alignment/Synchronization) Team lead and members: R.Joyner, R.Simpson, M.Gordon, and A. Raugh Short Description: Align and synchronize PDS4 documentation so that there are fewer inconsistencies and gaps, starting with the Standards Reference. Goals: Build documentation around the Information Model (and Data Dictionary). Streamline and modularize the Standards Reference so that it is more task oriented and presents rules succinctly; use it to supplement the IM/DD (i.e., text background for schemas and Schematron files, both present and future). Move most examples and recipes to the Data Provider's Handbook and an on-line collection of useful examples. Develop other on-line documentation resources to improve access and cross-referencing. Schedule: End of December - draft SR modules on structure/format End of February - draft SR modules on content End of March - improved set of examples (0.3.0.0.b) End of May - improved DPH End of July - improved wiki Throughout - iteration, cross-checking, testing against actual data
Build 3b Tasks Title: Geometry – To be presented separately Team lead: Ed Guinness (GEO) Short Description: Goals: Schedule (Major milestones):
Build 3b Tasks Title: Cartography Discipline Dictionary Team lead and members: Elizabeth Rye (EN/IMG) and Chris Isbell (IMG) Short Description: Develop a PDS4-compliant model to describe cartographic map projections. Goals: Release a stand-alone cartography discipline dictionary Schedule (Major milestones): Oct – Initial test of FGDC-derived model using Clementine 750nm Basemap– completed Nov – Identify remaining open issues (technical and model content) Jan – Resolve remaining open issues and update model; distribute for testing and feedback Feb – Collect feedback; update model; present to DDWG for approval Mar – Document and publish dictionary
Build 3b Tasks Title: Array_3D_Spectrum Associated Classes Team lead and members: Elizabeth Rye (EN/IMG) and Chris Isbell (IMG) Short Description: Develop classes to describe the spectral bands in an Array_3D_Spectrum (Qube) structure. Goals: Incorporate Band_Bin_Set and Band_Bin classes into the PDS4 Information Model Schedule (Major milestones): Nov – Submit draft classes for incorporation into 310B version of PDS4 model; seek feedback from user community Dec – Incorporate feedback into updated model; test with Clementine UVVIS 5-band data; present to DDWG for approval Jan – Document; publish as part of 3b release of model
Topics • DDWG - Scaling back • Build 3a is a public release of the PDS4 operational system (without PDS4 data products which are due in 2014) • Data Standards Release 0.3.0.0.a represents a stable release of the core standards; next update planned for Build 3b in March 2013 time frame • Special teams are being formed to address specific topics; teams periodically report back to the DDWG; results are reviewed and approved by the DDWG • Plan for evolution from standards design to standards maintenance and the disbanding of DDWG. • Topics with Teams. • PDS4 Standards Document Alignment - Ron, Dick, Mitch, Anne • Geometry - Ed, Chuck, ... • Cartography - Elizabeth, Chris • QUBE - Elizabeth, Chris • LDDTool- Team • Remaining Topics (To be prioritized) • Specific Discipline Level Geometry Issues from 2b. • Calibration • Processing History (AMMOS) • Operationalizing PDS4 Data Standards • Version 1.0 Release • Reinstatement of Standards Change Process for PDS4 • Operational Management of the Master Model and Data Dictionary • Operational Management of the Local Data Dictionaries. • Progress Reports form the Lead Nodes for the first PDS4 Missions • LADEE ATM • MAVEN PPI • InSight GEO • PhobosGrunt SBN • BepiColumbo
Build 3b Tasks Title: LDDTool (Local Data Dictionary Tool) Team lead and members: EN Short Description: Develop a tool that creates an XML Schema file and related documents from an XML input file that defines the classes and attributes for a local data dictionary. Goals: A version of LDDTool configured and managed as standard PDS4 software. Schedule (Major milestones): Nov – Tested and released with updated Ingest_LDDToolschema. Jan – Documented and managed under MAVEN Mar – Released as a PDS4 software tool.
