Center for Competitive Response to Globalization • Recent SBA Grant to help small businesses and individuals cope with challenges of global competition • FastTrac – education for entrepreneurs • JumpStart NYC – talent transition from large to small • Going Global (TBD) – business skills for globalization • NY in the World – research and public engagement project on impacts of globalization on NYC and State.
JumpStart NYC NYC EDC initiative to retain and retrain professional talent in the city, and connect it with entrepreneurial companies. Basic format of JumpStart NYC • Participants are NYC residents – finance or media background • No cost to participants or companies • One week “bootcamp” of instruction at Levin • 8-10 week action-learning project at small NYC firm • Coaching, mentoring, networking, and capstone sessions Goals • New skills, network, mentoring & supportive team • Opportunity to practice new tools of the trade • Double Dividend for firms – access to talent
JumpStart NYC Spring 2009 Pilot program • Participants: • 140 applications for 50 slots • Average years’ work experience: 15 • Over half obtained jobs or viable opportunity for paid work • Rated program 4.7/5.0 • Companies: • 75 companies submitted over 100 projects • Diverse industry mix: IT and tech, media and online, financial and other services • JumpStart exceeded company expectations • Extensive favorable media coverage

Enrollment for FastTrac NewVenture and GrowthVenture • 505 people enrolled as of October 2009 (goal of 800 by March 2010) • 18 courses completed (goal of 29 by March 2010) • 414 entrepreneurs and business owners graduated • 82% graduation rate Demographics • 63% of FastTrac NewVenture participants are unemployed • 16% of FastTrac NewVenture participants come from the financial sector • Top three sectors of FastTrac businesses are Professional/Scientific Services (25%), Retail Trade (20%), Information/Media/Internet (15%) • FastTrac serves participants from all five boroughs

Follow-up Milestones for GrowthVenture Graduates “Since finishing the program, I have accomplished the following:” (25 respondents) • 12% hired more employees • 48% stimulated more revenue • 12% applied/received financing/capital • 76% adjusted marketing plan • 36% conducted market research • 28% set up/made changes to accounting system • 8% applied for permits/licenses • 56% repositioned business strategy • 12% other • To date, 48% GrowthVenture graduates that responded to a survey have successfully increased their revenue (12)
