  1. Assassination Of Lincoln April 14,1865 Summary: President Lincoln attended the play Our American cousin at Ford’s Theater. This was just five days after the surrender of Lee’s army. When Licoln was watching the play, John Wilkes Booth, an actor, sneaked into the box and shot Lincoln in the back of the head. Then John Wilkes Jumped onto the stage and escaped before anyone caught him. Key People: Mary E. Surrat George A. Atzerodt Lewis Paine David E. Herold Abe Lincoln John Wilkes Booth Effect of Lincoln’s assassination was restoration. After he was assassinated vice president Andrew Johnson took office. This caused most southerners granted amnesty once they swore an oath of loyalty to the union.
