  1. Alcohols and Ethers Section 13.2 from Chemical Ideas

  2. C2H6O • There are two Isomers with this molecular formula • Ethanol and methoxymethane

  3. Ethanol • Belongs to the homologous series called alcohols • All members of the group contain the hydroxyl functional group…………. –OH • They only differ in the length of their hydrocarbon chain

  4. Methoxymethane • Belongs to the homologous series called ethers • All ethers contain the alkoxy group…… -OR

  5. CH3-OH CH3-CH2-OH CH3-CH2-CH2-OH CH3-CH2-CH2-CH2-OH methanol ethanol propan-1-ol butan-1-ol AlcoholsThey are named from the parent alkane by omitting the final –e and adding -ol

  6. Ethers • Ethers are derived from alkanes by substituting an alkoxy group ( -OR ) for an H atom, for example • CH3 – CH2 - O- CH2-CH3 • ethoxyethane • CH3 – CH2 – CH2- O- CH3 • Methoxypropane • Note that the longer hydrocarbon chain is chosen as the parent alkane
