  1. Safety & Management Solutions Ltd NEBOSH General Certificate In Occupational Health and Safety . Safety & Management Solutions Ltd April 2012

  2. NGC 2; Electrical Safety Safety & Management Solutions Ltd April 2012

  3. Learning Outcomes • Identify the Hazards associated with working with electricity • Identify control measure to reduce the risk from working with electricity Safety & Management Solutions Ltd April 2012

  4. Basic Circuitry Current Resistance Voltage Safety & Management Solutions Ltd April 2012

  5. Electrics and atoms • Atoms contain • Nucleus • Electrons • Electricity is • Movement of electrons • Conductive materials

  6. Sources • Alternators (generators) • Chemical reaction (batteries) • Solar panels • Heating and thermocouple which is a joint between dissimilar metals

  7. Hazards and controls • Primary • Direct – exposed live conductors • Indirect – equipment becomes live • Electric shock • Heart fibrillations • Death

  8. Hazards and controls • Secondary • Electric burns – heating effect, point of contact, deep • Microwaves – no contact • Arcing – UV radiation, molten metal, radiated heat • Fires – overheating of cables, current leakage, flammable materials close to electrical equipment, ignition by arcing • Explosions – of equipment, vapours, gasses, liquids and dust • Falls

  9. Hazards of Electricity • Electric Shock • Electrical Burns • Electrical Fires • Explosions • Secondary injury's Safety & Management Solutions Ltd April 2012

  10. Factors for severity • Current • Voltage • Frequency • Duration • Resistance • Current path Safety & Management Solutions Ltd April 2012

  11. Effects Of Current Flowing Through The Body Safety & Management Solutions Ltd April 2012

  12. Portable equipment • Conditions and practices likely to lead to accidents • Unsuitable equipment • Maintenance • Defective apparatus • Environment

  13. Controls • First aid • Raise alarm • Switch of power (emergency off, push/pull using good insulator) • Call for professional help • Breathing – recovery position • Not breathing –mouth to mouth • Treat burns – sterile dressing • Treat for shock • Remain with person

  14. Reducing risk • Limited access to live parts – impossible to make direct contact without use of a tool or a key • Insulating or shielding live parts – contact cannot be made without removing the insulation • Limiting supply types and voltages to relatively safe values • Ensuring that staff who may gain access to live parts are competent – fully insulated tools and follow safe working practices

  15. Selection of equipment • Do not exceed strength of capacity of equipment • Use appropriate equipment – consider environment- hazardous, arduous, work to be completed • CE Marked • Use lower voltage supply if possible • Check insulations meet BS 7671-1992 • Alterations to systems to be done by competent person • Overload protection devices are not limited to portable equipment

  16. Protective equipment • Fuse • Circuit breakers • Insulation • Low voltages • RCD • Double insulation

  17. Portable equipment • Choose low voltage or cordless tools • Visually inspect before use • Regular maintenance • Test regularly for earth fault leakage • Fit overload protection devices to systems and RCD

  18. Contact with services • Overhead lines - Causes arcing • Consider scaffold poles, ladders, cranes, tipper lorries, spades • Buried services • Locate cables – plans, cable detectors • Mark ground to show location • Use hand digging tools near to services • Emergency procedures

  19. User checks • PAT labels • Bare wires • Cable covering undamaged • Cable length • Plug condition • Burn marks • Taped/non standard joints • Cable gripped correctly • Outer case damaged • Trip devises

  20. Formal visual inspections • Routinely carried out • Risk assessment • Manufacturers recommendations • HSG (107) • Competent person • Records – must be kept, definitive list, regulate use

  21. Safe working • Accessible means of isolation • Prevention of inadvertent re-connection • Switches – keep access clear, mark clearly

  22. Safe working - dead • Provide temporary earth • Prove isolated circuits are dead • Prove test instruments first

  23. Safe working - live • Only allow if no other way • Suitable precautions to prevent injury • Competent persons, provide information, suitable tools, 2 man working/
