Economical Impact • America spends about $ 1 billion dollar per year disposing of excess food.
Environmental Impact • Greenhouse Gas: methane--20 times more harmful to the environment, if not properly managed, than carbon dioxide. • Food waste in America now accounts for more than one quarter of the total freshwater consumption.
Causes • Supermarket: Rather throw away than donate. • Restaurants: 90,000 restaurants and eateries do not participate in food donation programs. • Individuals: Over purchasing; ignorance of food production cost.
